Fava Beans

Our favas are up! Spring must just be about to arrive. Sorry Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, Buffalo and New England. Fava beans are a better prognosticator for the end of winter, at least down here, than Punxautawney Phil is up north...

Tom Fusia: Just a hack but with a passionate curiosity about all aspects of good food, from how the ingredients are grown/raised, its preparation, back story, cultural roots and obviously, its enjoyment. In our backyard - our little corner of calm and sanity in the world - there's a wood burning clay oven, a mini vineyard, a nice flat area along side for playing bocce, three olive trees, two fig trees, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, a vegetable garden with garlic, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, melons, miscellaneous greens, fava beans, herbs and even a 15 year old fennel plant. Plus a a few pet praying mantises patrolling the garden for insect pests, and a couple nutty cats running around. Phew!
